During my trip to Florida, I had the opportunity to visit many American homes, friends of my family, and what struck me, besides the size of the interiors, is that all the houses have a laundry room. Moreover, when showing you around their house, they proudly present their “laundry room”!
There was a time when, in our country too, laundry rooms held a beautiful place in our houses. Especially in the countryside. But with urbanization, the change in lifestyle, this room, although so useful, has fallen into disuse, often due to lack of space.
We prefer a large open living room rather than a functional laundry area.
The function of a laundry room
In principle, a laundry room's main function is to be a laundry, this involves different applications from washing clothes, to drying, and finally ironing.
If the room is small, you can arrange the washing machine and dryer in a column, which will save you space.
There is nothing better than drying laundry in the sun. But sometimes, in winter, this is not possible. So plan on a clothes horse, preferably a foldable or retractable one.
If your laundry room is large enough, it can also have a storage function for sheets and towels, for example, or for shoes.
The place of the laundry room in the house
There are two scenarios: you have a house and space to install a laundry area. Or you have an apartment and it is impossible to have a dedicated room.
In both cases, solutions exist.
Laundry room in an apartment
Don't panic if you want a laundry area in an apartment, you can definitely install one.
You just need to know that you can only install your laundry room in a damp room. That is to say with enough ventilation to avoid any problems. And you will necessarily have a water point.
In a bathroom:
If your bathroom is large, set aside a corner to install your washing machine. Simply place shelves above it with pretty baskets and that's it.
In a toilet:
A room that is often forgotten in terms of decoration but which can be interesting to fit in your laundry area if it is not too narrow. Here again, you just need to install shelves or drawers.
If in these cases you want to hide this laundry area, why not install a curtain? Or even cupboard doors?
In the kitchen:
Again, why not find a corner in the kitchen to install a mini laundry room? Simply build in your washing machine and dedicate one or two cupboards to it.
You can define your laundry area by choosing a different floor covering, or a special splashback.
Baskets and pots harmoniously placed on shelves can also give an identity to this area of the room.
The laundry room in a house
It is much easier to install this kind of room in a house. Because even if you do not have space, a corner of the garage can be assigned to this function.
This is what I am doing at home, the work has started and I will show you the Before/After result in a few weeks.
The laundry room in the garage
You can opt for a corner of the garage or even put up a partition to have a dedicated room.
For the first solution, simply mark out a space with a sheet of vinyl of a different color.
Then place a simple wooden board on your dishwasher and some shelves.
One or two pretty laundry baskets will complete the set.
A laundry room in the house
If you are lucky enough to have enough space and be able to dedicate an entire room to your laundry room, anything goes!
You can, like American homes do, afford huge washing and drying machines, cupboards, shelves, a sink and have your own work room for ironing, sorting and putting away your laundry.
Laundry room decoration
And why not?
I like to take care of my home, I like to clean. Tidying up, washing, folding and ironing my laundry are part of my daily life. The real life of most of us!
So why not take care of this room so that you can enjoy spending time there?
My decorating desires have reached my laundry room! And to be sure not to make a mistake, and to find inspiration, I created a board on Pinterest. You can refer to it to “pick up ideas”.
I already know the style I want to give it. Above all, it will be functional, but I will give it personal touches with small baskets and containers that are more attractive than the usual laundry detergent packets.
And yes, every room in the house deserves our attention, so why not a laundry room?
As always when I undertake work, I want everything to be finished before I start! I can't wait to enjoy this little corner! My future “Laundry room”.
And you? Do you have a laundry room?
