Dare to go black in a bathroom

Dare to go black in a bathroom

Living in an old house has its charm, of course, but work is constantly being done to improve it or simply give a more modern look to certain rooms.

Last year, I completely redid my guest room, I told you about it in this post. This room, which is upstairs, has two advantages: a terrace and an adjoining bathroom. When I was redecorating my guest room, I didn't have the courage or the means to renovate the bathroom. However, it's time to do it, because it has remained the same since the house was built. Apart from a lick of paint on the walls, I didn't have the courage to break everything.

Because, an old bathroom, means an old shower with a rim, sliding panels, and not very practical, in short an outdated layout and above all no longer functional at all.

I'm teeming with ideas to renovate this bathroom, as you can imagine! And to do it, as always, I'm poring over many catalogs and haunting specialized stores.

The layout of a bathroom depends on the size of the room. Mine is small but very bright thanks to two windows, which is a positive point for the decoration.

To give an impression of space and for more comfort, I will opt for a very practical and also very decorative Italian shower.

The Italian shower

The principle of a walk-in shower is a shower floor at the same level as that of the bathroom, without steps. This facilitates access and frees up space. A real walk-in shower is open, without a wall.
However, this arrangement is rather reserved for large spaces, because in a small bathroom, splashes can be restrictive and unpleasant.
It is entirely possible to partition off an Italian-style shower and I found the solution with industrial-style glass panels.

The pose and its constraints

Fitting this type of shower is not easy, because it is placed at ground level, you have to be very careful about the waterproofing and take some precautions before installing it.

Contrary to what you might think, tiling does not make the shower completely waterproof. The joints can crack, and it is important not to skimp on waterproofing.

There are three methods:

1) SEL (liquid waterproofing system): this is the simplest and quickest way to ensure the shower is waterproof. It is applied with a roller directly to the walls and floor.

2) The tiled panel: this panel, specially designed for showers, is waterproof if it is installed according to the rules of the art,
3) Waterproofing membranes or mats: they are to be laid like wallpaper before tiling. But they are very expensive.

What type of flooring should I choose?

The choice of shower floor is very important. Because it is better to avoid slipping in a shower!
I would opt for tiles with a non-slip texture, but some will prefer mosaic, a material that is a little more expensive to buy, but traditional in a bathroom.

But my bathroom design won't be limited to the shower, I also have to think about the rest of the room.

The layout and decoration

The room is small, but very bright, so for the choice of colors, I will stay classic and go for white, but mixed with black.
Black is a powerful ally for structuring volumes and giving character to a room. And you have to dare to use it in a bathroom, because this timeless and elegant shade will give a subtle touch to the decoration of the room and will wake up the whole.

Precisely, in a small room, daring a black wall will give an illusion of depth and will enlarge the room. Black tiles on the wall where a basin will be hung will reinforce this optical effect.
A single black wall can also serve as a backdrop, like a painting.
I also chose black to give an industrial feel to this small bathroom and to be able to integrate the shower panel in the same style.

Accessories

There's nothing like pretty, original accessories for a sophisticated, minimalist effect, and the bathroom is no exception.

As it will be white with a few touches of black, I chose a matte black resin faucet. For the shower I want to treat myself with a hydromassage column. I found mine at Lapeyre, sign where I always begin my investigations before undertaking work.
I am also considering installing a black ceramic sink.

Once the major work is finished, it will be time to put the finishing touches to the “small decoration”, that long-awaited moment when attention to detail takes on its full importance.

There, I don't hesitate to think outside the box and repurpose objects.

Rather than buying classic and expected bathroom pots, I will opt for a diversion of objects!
A black vase for paper handkerchiefs, rigid bags for small everyday accessories.
As the room is very bright, I wouldn't hesitate to overuse green plants placed in baskets as cache pots.

At the moment I am studying several quotes, which I must admit are giving me cold sweats! But that doesn't stop me from imagining it, from dreaming it and don't they say that waiting is the best time?

What do you think about black in decoration? Do you attach importance to the layout of your bathroom?
